About North Fairmount Community Center

Our History

North Fairmount Community Center (NFCC) was founded in 1980 by Lois Broerman with a deep commitment to serve the needs of the community. Her daughter, Linda Klems, joined the organization in 1997 in a data entry role and became co-director in 2003. For over 45 years, NFCC has remained deeply committed to serving our community residents. Following Ms. Broerman’s passing in 2017, Ms. Klems was elected by the Board to serve as Executive Director, continuing her mother’s unwavering dedication to North Fairmount.

Affordable housing has been the cornerstone of our work since day one. We have purchased, rehabbed, and sold more than 100 homes to first-time low-income home buyers, many of whom have experienced homelessness. Today, we continue to own and manage rental properties for families establishing their own households and working toward stability.

Our Services Today

As community needs have evolved, so have our services. NFCC now provides comprehensive support to help families thrive:

Housing Stability & Basic Needs

  • Affordable housing for low-income residents including families transitioning from homelessness
  • Angels Arms free store providing essential household items and clothing
  • Food distribution programs
  • Free furniture collection and delivery service connecting donors with families in need

Community Revitalization

  • Neighborhood cleanup initiatives
  • Murals and street plantings to beautify the community
  • Creating safe, welcoming public spaces for all residents

Youth Programs

As urgent needs emerged in our neighborhood, we expanded our programming to provide safe, positive opportunities for young people. Our youth initiatives include:

  • After-school enrichment program providing safe, structured activities (launched January 2022)
  • Eight-week summer camp in collaboration with Building Better Futures (BBF)
    • Introducing as of 2025: “Movement with a Purpose”
  • Cricut classes for children and teens
  • Dance programming in collaboration with Royal Dyamondz

Family Support Services

  • Experienced social worker providing free services to families
  • Case management and resource connection
  • Support navigating challenges and accessing community resources

Leadership & Vision

In recent years, NFCC has strengthened and expanded its programming under the leadership of our new Program Director, Ms. Denise Hill. With extensive experience in family services and program development from her previous roles at Bethany House Services and St. Aloysius Orphanage, Denise brings strategic vision and compassionate leadership to our growing organization. Under her direction, we’re developing new programs and enhancing existing services to better meet evolving community needs.

Looking Forward

We believe that our 45-year history has benefited our community—and our continued growth will make the futures of the people we serve even brighter. Every program, every service, and every initiative is designed with one goal in mind: creating opportunities for success and building a stronger, more vibrant North Fairmount.

Get Involved

Our programs thrive through community participation. Whether you’re interested in volunteering your time, donating items or funds, or partnering with us in other ways, we would love to have you join the team!
